HI,
I am trying to get my TV audio from the SPDF port to my computer. I just want to be able to listen to it through my computer speakers or headphones.

I bought an external sound card:
http://www.amazon.com/Optimal-Shop-Channel-External-Surround/dp/B00Q4WQ7XW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
and installed it. It works as I get sound from my computer but I cannot get sound from my TV. In the recording devices controls it has listed "SPDF in (usb multi channel device) Currently available." I have the TV set to external speakers but no sound is coming through. the TV is an LG LM4700 and computer using windows 7.
Anybody have experience with this or suggestions on settings to check?

To get a headphone out on your TV why involve your PC.
All you need is a either a headphone amp with optical audio input
http://audioengineusa.com/Store/D1-24-Bit-DAC#B
or a separate DAC like this one
http://www.parts-express.com/parts-express-dac-digital-to-analog-converter-%2851-compatible%29--180-999
and a headphone amp
http://www.parts-express.com/pyle-pha40-4-channel-stereo-headphone-amplifier--248-4410
If you are open to new headphones you can get wireless ones with optical input
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Wireless-Headphones-FiiO-Connection/dp/B00BVUAMYW
or if you want to use BT phones you can get a transmitter like this one

I decided to return as I decided the Optical input was not working. I'm going to try a sewell direct External sound card. More expensive but I'm hoping it is worth it. All I want to do is be able to use headphones on my TV! Not ready to buy a theatre system yet. I really wish they would put a headphone jack back into TV's.

Hey thanks for the suggestions, Believe me I have hashed out every option available.

Headphone Amp is too expensive. All I want do is add a headphone jack and at $170, I figured I might as well spend an extra $50 for a new receiver. But why would I want to spend over $50 to add a headphone jack to my TV?

I tried a DAC an returned it yesterday because they do not have a volume control and with optical connections, they only put out the information and it is up to the amp to amplify it. so that was a bust and returned it yesterday.

The 4 channel headphone amp does not have optical in so I would need to combine it with the DAC putting my price at around $50 plus I would now have 2 boxes to kick around. Thought about going this route but decided it was too much trouble and potential for loss of sound quality is high.

I also thought of running from the DAC to a set of computer speakers as they have a headphone output. but I didn't want the clutter and price was getting up there.

As for the headphones, I do love my Grado's, though respect the sennheisers, they just don't compare.

The TOsblueX I had not seen but I suspect I would have the same problem with volume as I do with the DAC alone.

The reason I am going the sound card route is that my TV sits right next to my computer so it is easy to connect. Also I have not been happy with the sound card in it right now and expect a boost from it in all the media I use on the computer, Spotify and what not. The card is only $30 and I expect it to hold other benefits down the road.

Further down the road I will add a theatre system and receiver but am not ready to go there yet.

Thanks for the Suggestions.
