vcr/dvd recorder won't record

cable co. went digital. Set top box is hooked. Can play a dvd but cannot record anything. Tried channel 3,l1,l2 nothing works. Cable company was no help. Samsung tv about 9 yrs old, Magnavox vcr/dvd recorder about 8 yrs old. please help
