Verizon cripples their phones?

I've been thinking of switching to Verizon and the Kyocera KX414.
However, I've heard that they've changed the shortcut keys on the
directional pad to be revenue-generating items for them like Get It
Now and Mobile Web instead of Kyocera's (much more logical) defaults
of Contacts, Silence Phone, and Lock Keypad (like my Kyocera 2135).
Apparently these can't be changed either. Also, I understand they've
removed the games (so you have to buy them on Get It Now?).

It all sounds fishy to me. I'm seriously thinking of Sprint instead
with their roam-free option. Their customer support repuation concerns
me a little bit though... although the VI600 looks like a nice phone
with shortcut keys for both silent mode, and locking the keypad...

Does anyone have experience with the KX414 they can share?

yes you are right and that no other cell providers are doing the same
thing. With sprint for example everything is free: web, sending movies and
pictures etc..... Not.

I'm not trying to create a Verizon vs. Sprint debate. My beef is that
useful shortcut keys have been replaced with functions that I will use
almost never.

The Moto 730, which VZW just discontinued, allows you to assign your
shortcuts to what you want, not what VZ wants.

You can still get a new Moto 730 from independent resellers of VZW. I
just got one. It's a great flip phone, not as slim as some, but with
real phone (e.g., no silly, low-res digital camera).

I got the Moto T730 at Radio Shack for $29.95 on a 2 year contract when I
ported my wife to Verizon from AT&T (GSM) where she had a T720. Made the
learning curve for her new phone almost non-existant.... Wish she would have
learned how to use the features on the T720 though ;-)

I have noticed on the T730 I can set the defaults as I want, unlike my
Audiovox CDM8600.

FYI-- VZW did the same thing with the Nokia 3589i. Short cut locked to GIN.
No games. I'm concerned they'll do the same thing with the Treo.

I've used a spakerphone in the car - it's not as good as a handsfree
device, but it works.

I picked up some of those adhesive velcro sticker things (not sure of the
exact terminology, but I call the two types hooks and rugs..) at a store for
about $1.49. I put the Hook sticky things on the dash/lamp in the house/wall
by the charger/desk at work etc, and stuck the rug part to the back of the
phone. As I move around, I just stick the phone to the velcro. I also use
voice dialing... hit the big green send, it asks for who to call, I say the
name (or what I recorded), and it calls. Cool

PS.. Side benefit, I no longer lose the phone in the couch cushions or in
the recliner... always know where it is.

PPS voice dialing is fun... I give people things I remember like "Bald guy
with glasses", "Wifes Bitchy Sister" etc.... makes calling more fun....
(don't do that if you have kids in the car, unless you have a voice entry
for "Divorce Lawyer"

I've never been impressed with the voice dialing, at least not on my
Audiovox 9500. As often as not, the phone can't recognize what I
say. Being able to dial numbers ("call one-seven-five...") would be
much more useful to me.

The more CLUES voice recognition has for each number, the fewer dial
failures you'll have. That has been my experience. Some accents and
sloppy/slurred enunciation make voice commands less accurate too.

Good thing.... Saved me from calling people (voice dialing) last time I was
drunk.... Maybe it's a safety feature?
