vga to rca has sound but no picture

I'm trying to connect my Nintendo 64 up to a computer monitor with a vga to rca, the sound comes out just fine but the picture doesn't work. is it because it also has an svideo slot?

A simple adapter does not work. There are a lot of negative reviews on that page...
