Morning all,

My wife's Sony Viao (i3, 4 gb, 1 year old, win 8 upgraded to win 8.1) powers on fine. Windows starts normally (no virus stuff that I can see) but then ... after 1-2 minutes it just dies. Power's off. Not a windows is shutting down - this is black screen - there is no power shutoff.

If this were a desktop i'd be thinking PSU.

No significant drop / new software ...

I've built 3 desktops and have used PC's since 97. Can a laptop PSU go bad in a year ?
Other thoughts: Can this be a sony driver's / win 8.1 issue ?
Thanks for any help / thoughts ? dan

Can you hear the fan spinning? If not, the CPU's safety feature kicks in and powers off instantly. You can also verify if the RAM is well placed into the slots.

I doubt it's laptop PSU related, I'm going to guess (as it hasn't been stated) that the battery is trashed which is causing false readings. Try removing the battery and running it purely of the PSU alone and see what happens.
