Video editing software tutorial help

Hi all

Grandads birthdays coming up and they haven't got a official release for a show he wants so I am having to download it off Youtube and then burn it to a DVD, recommendations for any good video editing software? Also how would I add a fade/Transition scene to the videos so I can fade after each scene has finished?

Really would like some help, apologies if this is in the wrong thread.

after effects is my favorite at editing or sony vegas..
you can search in youtube for after effects transitions tutorial there are some good stuff you can use
