If it's free, you have nothing to lose by trying it yourself, instead of asking us.

I've been using Vuescan for over 12 years, and have a lifetime license to it. It's great for using old scanning hardware which the manufacturer no longer supports or which never got driver updates for newer OS versions. And its features are aimed at professional scanning, and often exceed the capabilities of the manufacturer drivers and software which shipped with the scanner (e.g. you can scan an IT8 target and use it for automatic color calibration). It supports flatbeds, film scanners, and transparency adapters, and even supports IR dust removal on many scanners which have that feature. If your scanner is no longer supported, Vuescan is pretty much your best bet for being able to use it again.
