Waking up in the middle of the night — what's normal and when is it a problem?

There is some evidence that before electric lighting allowed us to stay up after dark, sleeping in two periods with a waking hour or so in between, was common. People would do a variety of things while they were awake and then go back for their "second sleep". This is true for me, and to make it work, I need to get to bed by 10:30 or so.
