am afraid the old thing is going to die soon, and I never really learned to use most of it (no Mac folks to teach me in this rural part of Tn without driving over an hour each way). I don't do much but surf, email, download and edit my photos/short videos (we sell horses), and use the limited word processing.
No game, no social networking, no watching videos, no tech stuff at all...don't want to..My entire computer life is on this Mac, can I transfer the files I want to keep to a PC laptop or will most of be corrupted? I am not technically skilled so would have to have someone do it. thanks

get a cheap extrernal harddrive and transfer files over

to do this you will need to reformat your external drive macs are annoying and need a bit of tweaking

Most Windows drives use the NTFS file system, while Mac external drives must use “exFat” or “Fat32.” To format the drive on your Mac, open a new Finder window, open the "Application" folder, then "Utilities." Double-click "Disk Utility" and highlight the device name of the external hard drive. Click the "Erase" tab and select "MS-DOS File System." Click the "Erase" button to format the drive. Note that if you format the drive, the process erases all data from the external storage device

then follow steps

now all your files will be on the external hd ready to be transfered to any laptop you want.

whats your budget and willing to spend on a pc laptop we have your requirements but a budget would be good to worth with

actually, the more I read your post, the more I understood it. As long as I had my data protected in the old Mac, I just might try it myself..If I succeeded, I would be so impressed ! Thanks again..
I have a mini budget, I'm afraid. We are fairly advanced in years, live on a somewhat self sustaining small farm, and money is tight. I spent too much on this Mac at the time, but it HAS lasted far longer than expected..But never learned to use whatever is special about a Mac, so I'm ready for a basic latop.
I take alot of photos, but I only edit them based on what each photo needs, nothing fancy, and no real photoshop faking needs..I do quite a bit of internet searching to research different subjects. I don't download videos, watch videos, download music, play games. I don't need spreadsheets, I do make a brochure now and then, and I used to make simple cards, flyers, etc, on my old PC.
so basic I guess is the best description. Old fashioned basic.
$300-$600 tops for me, and I suppose that's silly. I know they have cheap laptops in the stores, but I also suppose they are full of garbage I don't need. If you all can help, that would be great.

for what you ask thats pretty reasonable pricing

id say this would last you a good while

Theres plenty of machines out there in your price range windows has evolved a bit as well since then so im going to drop you some videos so you can learn about the system before purchasing.

first contender is apu a6 5200 quad core with graphics chip 8400 this is most basic of the series and power friendly

http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Black-Licorice-15.6-2000-2d27CL-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-A6-5200-Accelerated-Processor-4GB-Memory-500GB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-8/28877441

a8 5550m quad core 2.1 to 3.1ghz boost
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312828

majour diffrences from these laptops is speed in the processor cores

a6 5200 is designed for just webrowsing every day tasks and light photo editing

a8 5550m quad is for people who want that extra burst of speed in doing tasks when its required and want a overall better video play back.

the reason i recomend the apu line is they are energy efficient and light weight.

I am grateful there is a site like this that seems to really care about people's needs instead of a constant sell sell tactic..thanks again and happy holidays
