My girlfriend spilled water all over her Toshiba Laptop yesterday and now it
won't start. Any suggestions on what to do?

If you immediately took it apart and dried it, it might have made it.

Now will probably not survive, but the hard drive might be OK if it didn't
get water on it. If you get another like it, the hard drive may swap right
into it and she can continue where she left off.

It's also probably covered under homeowner's insurance.

John may be right but it is worth exploring further before giving up.
Depending on how confident you are in taking it apart, it is worth doing
and cleaning everything carefully with a Q tip for instance. Letting the
machine dry a few days in a dry atmosphere cannot hurt either. If after
that, the machine is still dead, why not take it a professional? Given
the price of a new machine, this is worth a try. Other than that, as
John said, chances are that the harddisk is not damaged (unless the
machine was immerged) and therefore moving it to a similar machine
should work. But do not give up too quickly.

Hi,
First thing, take battery out and unplug the AC adaptor.
Take the laptop apart, let it sit near the windows sill where the sun is
strongest after wiping off water. Wait for 3 days or so to get rid of
mosture and try it. On the small scale, my kid dropped his game boy into
toilet. I took it apart and wiped off all the water and tried it - No
go. But after leaving it in open air for a few days, tried again - it
worked.

Remove any and all easily accessible parts, dry them and set them aside for
now. Place the laptop on a wooden cutting board in the oven with the
temperature set to low (120 if possible) and the oven door open. Wait 8
hours and then let the laptop sit another 8 hours. Assemble and sacrifice a
virgin of your choosing... it should work.

if it was just water, let it dry out. It may take some time (could be a
week), but except for the keyboard, it will proabably work again. The
keyboard may have to be replaced, not the worst thing that could happen
(should be under $100). A "warm air bath" may help, but be careful not
to "cook" the computer. Also, removing as much as you can and getting
any physical liquid water out will help, but if it's alreay been a day
or two, you may not be able to do much in that regard.

Have whomever gave your laptop a bath, make em pay. Same thing happened to me and only thing i could save was the hard drive. On a dell the processor is just below the screen. Shorts out everything.
