Waze feels like it’s on a collision course to being merged into Google Maps — and that shouldn’t happen

It's just yet another of an example of Google doing Google things; which translates to this company can never just leave well enough alone. I use both Maps and Waze for different scenarios. I use Google Maps for in town/local navigation. Even when I know the route I launch Maps to keep me aware of traffic backups or accidents. I use Waze for over the road trips where I can get notifications of debris in the road, construction bottlenecks or speed traps. One of the reasons I use Android devices is I like having options. But between the loss of several mobile manufacturers and conglomerates like Google killing useful projects and homogenizing existing ones it seems like consumers are having less and less options and freedom of choice
