What causes speaker hiss with my ipod?

I bought a new receiver, and rewired both speakers. The FM stations work well, but the speakers hiss when I'm playing the ipod. Any help out there?

Try adjusting the volume of the iPod.

The ipod has low quality analog output.

Turn the receiver volume up, turn the ipod volume down.
