What does the LCD LED Sub Card Inverter do?

Hello,
The reason I ask this is because I'm currently in training for an IT position, I am currently working on a Thinkpad T400 that had a bad monitor. I have replaced the monitor but now when I turn it on it shows power on the inverter (the lights for charging, on, etc.) and then when it goes to turn the monitor on the computer shuts off and will not work until I unplug the power source and plug it back in. This now occurs with the old monitor as well. My belief is that the little board under the monitor has died which is the Sub Card inverter and was wondering if that might be the problem. Thank you your help and I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

Thank you very much Brett! I had a hunch that it might be that so I went and ordered one real cheap. I got my fingers crossed that that is the issue and I will post back if the problem is not solved when I put it in. Thank you for your help!
