Hey guys,

Im going to college next year and I need a laptop because I can't really drag my full tower desktop around with me. But my problem is that I know nothing about laptops, and I would like a gaming laptop preferably. So I need help finding a good laptop at an affordable price.

I'll be using it for some light game design and coding and CAD(and 1080p gaming) so I would like a pretty good cpu and graphics and at least 8gb of ram :)

I hope you guys can recommend some laptops or even some of the better brands :)

Thanks

Most definitely this for workstation use making use of the budget of course: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834332305&cm_re=i7_7500u-_-34-332-305-_-Product
For gaming (It's a refurb though! EEK!): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234420&cm_re=970m-_-34-234-420-_-Product
Note that with the latter, battery life is only a few hours and the thing weighs a tonne.
Realistically that first laptop I listed is a killer deal, and is probably the best you'll find for the next 6 months, all you need for uni really.

The laptop still has a GPU which allows for some good Esports gaming. ;)
It goes over by $40, but will give you a significantly better deal.

Thanks this really helps :) I hadn't actuslly considered having a separate itx system, but I might look into it now :) yeah I'll be rendering in CAD. If I was to ask you to recommend a single laptop for under 1000 dollars, what would you recommend?

I wouldnt recommend getting a gaming laptop for this price at this point of time,
Laptops with the GTX 1050 and 1050Ti will launch around january and you will get a big performance boost from waiting
If you dont want to wait, I would recommend this laptop:
https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-V5-591G-55PV-15-6-Inch-i5-6300HQ-Bilingual/dp/B01ER4AJPU/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1480778029&sr=1-2&keywords=gtx+950m+laptop
its not that good, a bit big and heavy for my taste, but thats a very good laptop for 1000% CAD
