What happens if I exceed RAM limit?

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline s5713w. I was wondering what happens if I exceed what I believe to be the 4 GB of RAM limit. It's running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. When I scanned on Crucial, I got the following

Maximum memory: 4096MB
Slots:2 (2 banks of 1)
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
2GB
DDR PC2-6400
1GB
DDR PC2-6400


Can I exceed 4GB of RAM or not? Any help would be highly appreciated.

not. it said 2 slots, max of 2 GB. 2x2GB is 4GB
