GPU: Intel HD 4000
HDD: 500GB
RAM: 4GB (gonna upgrade to 8GB when I can)
Optical: DVD-RW

can this laptop be used for school, programming or light gaming (if it can be used for light gaming say what games it can)

if you mean light gaming as in angry birds or sim games then yeah it will do the job.
it will struggle with more demanding games to the point even on minimum they will be unplayable...
gta5 for instance barely hits 25 fps on minimum settings @720p and will often stutter badly on the hd4000.

so i would say its more than fine for school work and ok for light gaming.

perfectly fine for programming. in fact its a lot more than you need in some respects.

It's fine for programming, but it uses a 3rd generation Intel CPU. Why not look for a laptop with a 5th generation Intel CPU like the i5-5200u which will have a more powerful Intel HD 5500 that would be more capable of playing games.
