What's needed for 7.1 virtual surround sound on headphones?

Here's the thing: i'll be getting the msi gaming 5 mother board. In it's specifications, under audio channels it says 7.1. Will this be enough to get 7.1 surround sound on stereo headphones like the hyperx cloud ones or should i get something like the corsair vengeance 2100 with built-in 7.1 capable sound card? I would be using them mainly for multiplayer fps.

Yes. But you know its emulated - not actual discrete channels? There are not a total of 8 speakers in the headphones.
