WHATS WRONG WITH MY LAPTOP

my new hp laptop was fine then opened thescreen and the right side about 1/4 of it is white with some multi colored lines also some flickering

Do you get the multi colored lines and flickering during post or just when you are in Windows?

It sounds like there is a problem with your LCD. Seek a local computer shop to have it replaced.

Your screen is fucked
Take it to a repair shop, or if your feeling gutsy
Order a new screen, and take out the old one, and install the new one.

But since you didn't know what the possible problem was, I'm going to assume that you don't know much about computers, and replacing screens in laptops is still an uneasy task for me.

Again, take it to a repair shop, get it replaced, its not the GPU because you said some are flickering, which shows that its still working, but the screen isn't.

Had this happen to my wife's HP after a warranty repair for something else and it was a loose lcd cord. If it's new and under warranty HP is pretty quick about repair. Total turn around less than 2 weeks and they pay shipping.
