A friend of mine recently moved to a new place and, with moving houses being said, has gotten a new room. There is a goal to put speakers (and a possibly a subwoofer) in said room. I will upload pictures of the room with all the corners included, and am open to suggestions on how the speakers should be set up, what kinds of speakers he should get, and how to optimize the setup with the materials he has already (the TV on the wooden jerry-rigged stand might be wall mounted.) Thanks in advance!

Note: In the last picture of the back of the room, the night stand in front of the fireplace is temporary; they've just moved in.

I can't see the images at work, but this all depends on what speakers you are talking about, surround sound? 2.1? What?

Can you run wires around the room with no issues? It's not too hard really, to get the imaging right for the TV, for something like 5.1 surround, center goes about the middle of the TV, front of behind it is fine, the front and rears should be a few feet away from the screen, you move and angle them around towards where you sit if needed if you can't place them exactly.

If you do a web search for 5.1 speaker placement you'll find quite a few guides with images like this. Note that is for 5.1, but others are there.
I have actually become a fan of soundbars for speakers, especially in rooms where you can't place...

I have actually become a fan of soundbars for speakers, especially in rooms where you can't place rear speakers anyway. Soundbar can be pretty cheap, much better than TV speakers, and you can get some with bluetooth to play phone/tablet music from easily. Vizio ones are priced well and sound good for $100 range. You can ofcourse spend 2-3 times that for a bit better sound, but that really depends on how you hear things and what you like.
