I'm choosing between two laptops for basic home use and some casual gaming. I've read that I definitely will want quad core with at least 8gb ram. That information caused me to narrow it down to two models and would love input on which is the better of these two:

HP15-p390nr Beats Special Edition laptop

OR

Dell Inspiron i5555-2144

Otherwise if I only go dual core there is the Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-4001SLV as a choice too.

While the AMD A10-7300 APU in the HP 15 is a quad core CPU, AMD processors are rather weak compared to Intel's processors. The A10-7300 will have lower performance compared the dual core i5-5200u in the Dell Inspiron laptop, and that is only if all 4 cores are being used. Most programs only use 1 or 2 cores. The benchmarks generally indicates that the A10-7300 is closer to the performance of a dual core i3 CPU which is similar to an i5 but has lower clockspeed.

For graphics, the A10-7300's Radeon R6 (Kaveri) graphics core is not a whole lot better than the Intel HD 5500 graphics core. Don't get me wrong, the Radeon R6 (Kaveri) is more powerful than the Intel HD 5500, but it is not significant and for Facebook games it will not matter...

Go with the HP15. From a gamer's perspective it will give you more performance on a graphics end. If you intend to use it for more work-friendly stuff you want to pay attention to the processor, in which case the Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-4001SLV will perform faster but not as efficiently as a Quad-core.

So bottom line:
If you want more gaming capability from the laptop: HP15
If you want an efficient office laptop with mild/low gaming ability: Inspiron i5555-2144
If you want a cheaper speedy office laptop and couldn't care less about graphics: Inspiron 15 i5558-4001SLV

I'm not really looking for an office laptop in terms of spreadsheets, powerpoint and the like. I'm a writer so I'll be doing a great deal of word processing, but I also do some photo and audio editing. As for gaming, I don't do anything high-tech, just Facebook games and I am still into SIMs. I like the other specs and the look of the HP better. I'm just concerned if the 1.9ghz is enough speed. My current laptop has a 2.2ghz processor and I've been well-pleased with it, but it's only dual core versus the quad core in the HP. Does that make up for the ghz deficit? I am a little leery of overheating with the HP too because that's what killed my current HP laptop (after 3 years the fans gave out) but I've read those problems have been fixed so maybe this is no longer an issue with HP?

Sorry I'm late getting back to you, hope you didn't purchase it yet. From what you described I'd recommend the Inspiron i5555-2144 because you are looking for something better than a dual core. As for quad vs dual from my understanding the amount of cores has to do with speed. The more GHz per core the faster it processes things, on the other hand the fewer cores the less multitasking a processor can do. Because you don't need a powerful GPU for flash and sims games you should go with laptop that has a processor that meets your needs. Also you should try to avoid intel because intel can be more expensive and more vague when it comes to repairs and upgrades.

Note there are two versions of the Radeon R6 (Kaveri) graphics core, the more powerful version is in the A10-7400P APU.

As for buying the laptops from QVC... they are pretty expensive compared to what you can buy from Amazon or Newegg.

You can purchase the following 15.6" Asus laptop with a Core i5-6200u, nVidia 940m and a 1080p resolution screen for $590. The nVidia 940m easily outperforms the graphic cores in the A10-7300 and the Intel HD 5500 / HD 520 graphics core; though the 940m itself is considered a weak dedicated graphics chip. However, for Facebook games it does not matter. But for the Sims 4 you will get much better performance and you can play at 1080p.
