Solved! Which laptop to buy?

Solution

This is the best of the ones you have listed. Don't expect miracles from the 6550, but it should be fine for medium settings. It's comparable to the GT 540M.

To be honest, finding a gaming laptop under $650 is really not going to happen. Do you really need a gaming laptop? You could have a great gaming desktop for that price, and will be able to upgrade it in the future.

I don't know about a $650 gaming laptop. You might find a used one for that. Check it out to make sure it works, though.

With that said; I'm using a Gateway NV 73 with 4 gigs of RAM and an AMD Athlon II X2 M300 cpu that cost about that much new. The only addition is a 7200 rpm 500 gb Hybrid hdd (Seagate, I think). It runs Win7 and Linuxmint in a dualboot configuration.

Good luck.

One other thing I forgot to mention... you're not going to get decent gaming performance with the stock 5400 rpm hdd that comes in most new laptops. You'll need at least a 7200 rpm hdd for performance sake. If you can affoed it later there are 10,000 and 15,000 drives out there too. Check out www.newegg.com for good prices and fast delivery.
