Which of these 3 laptops would be best for gaming.

Ok i am stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to figure out wich of these i should buy, i will be playing games such as bf3, gta iv and skyrim.

1) Custom built alienware m14x

i7 2670QM 2.2GHz
4GB Dual Channel DDR3
1.5GB DDR3 NVIDIA GT 555M
500GB 7200RPM

2) Msi 683r

When in doubt, go for the best graphics cards. Companies overrate the power of cpus, hard-disks and other components for gaming performance. So, either the second or third laptop would be most suitable for gaming.

I agree with that, one of my biggest concerns is build quality i want it to last, the msi is a beast but i have read some reviews reporting that is would crash after a few months of ownership. i havent read this alot about the m14x or g74

Asus builds their own boxes.....most laptops are built by someone you never heard of. But at your budget, I'd have the laptop custom built....the alieanware btw is a huge step down but Clevo used to build Alienware before Dell bought them.

Your link is broken saratj1. The reason I would get the ASUS is that they are known for good build quality. You get a one year accidental damage replacement plan. ASUS honors their warranties and they are one of the best brands. You know you are getting quality from them.

okay im no longer considering the msi because i have heard alot of bad things about their customer service im looking at the sager np8170, m14x and g74, how would portability be with 17 inch laptops? that the thing i like about the m14x is it seems to be protable but the other two seem to be way better for the money.

It actually isn't too bad at only 4.8 pounds(is this correct though?). The dimensions are 32.5 x 42 x 2.09 ~6.2 cm (WxDxH) or 12.8 x 16.5 x 0.08 ~2.4 in (WxDxH). For a gaming laptop your want to have a good size screen. The resolution is 1920 x 1080 (which is better), has more memory, has a blue ray drive and has the better GPU. Alienware has a smaller laptop.

Ok that sounds more correct but this is what is on their website. "Weight 4.28 lbs (with 8 cell battery)" but if it was kg then is could be 9.456lbs. Alienware is 6.45 lbs.

does the laptop have to be able to play games? cause at that price you could buy a cheap 400-600 dollar laptop and build a desktop that would be MUCH faster.

i prefer laptop over desktop because for one i dont really have the space for a big gaming rig. and i could pick out all the parts but i dont think i could put them together.

im probably going to go with the alienware its a good size with good specs, the asus just seem to big.

all it takes is the ability to plug a cord in and make sure it clicks lol. all you needs is a screw driver and some fingers. you get a much better return on your money.

you could build two desktops for 1400 dollars that would outperform those laptops by atleast 30%

You can get 'big' performance in a small form factor desktop case.

The laptop GT 555M graphics card is roughly equal to a $85 desktop Radeon HD 5670.
GTX 560M laptop graphics card is roughly equal to a $100 desktop GTS 450 graphics card.

i agree with you guys desktops are way cheaper/sutible for gaming but like i said i dont really have the space in my room for one. that said is the gt 555m a decent graphics card?
