Well those are not the most high quality speakers out there but I bet you already figured that out. So what about the 2.1 setup you mentioned? That setup has multiple satellite speakers and a subwoofer so it's designed for games and movies, not for music. I'd speculate that the 2.1 setup has better quality and is better suited for music, but lacks the 3D effect created by having speakers all around you.
