Why does my notebook only stay at 50% charge and then turns off after i unplug c

So my notebook will number one, only go on it it is plugges in. Two, even when the charger is connected, it will not charge, but only stay at 50%. An of course last, but definetely not the least if I were to unplug the charger at any time that I am on my laptop it automatically turns off!!!!

Older I'm assuming? Sounds like a bad battery.
