Why has my laptop have a black Screen

So recently i have been trying to fix my brother's laptop but for some reason it has a black screen but it works fine i can get on to the documents etc but i can't see windows

Hi,

Can you please explain further about that issue? You said it's on a black screen but you can view documents but can't see Windows? I'm just a little confused because you're in Windows since you can open files or documents but you can't see Windows?
- Please do try a hard reset first, remove the battery and AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and see if it would load normally.
- If you can open programs I would suggest running System Restore first, restore you PC back to an earlier date or time before the problem even happened.
