i used my nikon d5100 for 4 days on a trip with the same memory card. i looked at the lcd screen and all seemed fine at the time. when i returned home the last day's didn't download to my computer. the previous days did. i put the card back into my camera and the last day's photos were gone from there also. i didn't delete or format the card. what could have happened?

thanks for your help, but the card was checked at a data retrieval service and they said it was fine. i never delete and always format. i sent it to lexar for review, but it will take 5 weeks. i also had the camera checked and it's fine also. a real mystery!

There are data recovery tools for memory cards so your images should be recoverable. But without looking at the card myself I can't say for sure the card is bad; It could be as simple as the file count for the previous folder reach your pre-set max and it created a new folder. But as you have sent the card off to Lexar you should have a definitive answer from them (they are pretty good about that).

thanks for your help. i looked for another folder, but since the card had relatively few photos there wasn't one. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that lexar solves the problem.

On Nikon Cameras the new folder is not created due to the number of files but based on the file name.
So if your highest file number was \100ND5100\DSC_998.jpg and your folder setting was capped for 1000 then your next photo would be the last stored in that folder (as DSC_999.jpg) and a new folder would be created named something like \101ND5100\
One thing to try is search the SD card for for *.jpg and look at the pathing to the images. Might be that a folder somehow got hidden (attrib -h in CMD to fix)

this is helpful information and i will keep this in mind. however, i did have a data retrieval service look at it and said they found nothing. i sent the card to Lexar so perhaps they'll do better. i will check my folder settings on the camera. thanks again!
