Why won't my smart tv detect my laptop

I recently bought a vizio smart tv and have been trying to hook up my laptop to it so that I can watch movies. Only problem is that my laptop is a dell inspiron 1440 runs on windows 7 and doesn't have an hdmi port, my tv only has an hdmi porrt and usb port but no vga. I bought a cable to hook up my laptop and tv but still no luck. cable had a usb, hdmi and smart phone hook up, i believe brand is craig. can someone please help me. fyi i dont have wifi only ethernet hookup and i cant hookup a router to it or it would mess up everyones internet connection in my complex

So what cable did you get then if it doesnt have HDMI

I bought a MHL Micro USB to HDMI 1080P HDTV Adapter Cable to connect it to my smart phone

and it also doesnt detect my phone

Probably wasnt meant to connect to a phone
