Will an older battery in an Aspire 7551-4909 cause overheating and shutdown?

My Aspire 7551-4909 shuts down with no notice or warning. Don't do gaming or music so use is relatively normal to light. Will an older battery, which works fine, possibly cause overheating and shutdown. Any suggestions are appreciated. Maybe I just need some medication to cope.....!

Is the battery itself really hot??

If the battery gets really hot and causes the rest of the computer to get hot then yes it could cause overheating.

A bad battery that does not get hot wont cause overheating, but could obviously cause it to still have abrupt power downs.
