Win XP Pro

Hi Every one
I have lost the sound on my desk top, the speakers appear to be working they click when I plug or unplug them, but no sound from any programme, or when logging on or off. Win XP Pro disc will not repair it, when I try it says the installed programme is better than that on the disc. How can I get it back.

Obviously start by going to Control Panel, Sound and Audio settings and check that the required inputs and the master volume are not muted or the volume turned down.
