I have an old project I started almost a decade ago that I just now decided to finish up. It is *.MSWMM so I'm forced to use Windows Movie Maker 2.6 or use XP's 2.1 in a virtual environment. All of the project's video files are *.WMV.

My questions are:

1. How can I render this project as losslessly as possible?

2. I want to render to .AVI because it seems widely adopted compared to .WMV, will this affect quality?

Solution

Yes, that would be a good choice.
As far as I know the .MSWMM extension is that of a Windows MovieMaker project file and not a video format. You can open the file with Windows MovieMaker and then export the file as a .avi file or another format of your choice. As for the quality of the video output it will depend on the quality of the source (original) video file.

Your fourth link brings to light the idea of saving a project file readable in WMM 2.1/2.6 to WMM 6.0 which, can in turn, be read by WMM 2012. Maybe I should do that to get the rendering options of WMM 2012?

Yes, that would be a good choice.
