Wireless charging works if the chargers are cheap. We have 6 iDevices in our family (counting kids iPods) - everyone wants a turn on a few chargers. Plus more for traveling or the car.

Wireless charging is still inefficient. These chargers will burn through much more power to have the same charging time, or they will take forever to charge a device if same amount of power is used.

[citation][nom]zoemayne[/nom]nothing new about wireless charging but since apples doing it its "revolutionary"[/citation]
So true. It has been out for a while....Hell its almost the same as the way many electric toothbrushes charge...

[citation][nom]mchuf[/nom]It will be "revolutionary" because it will be an Apple exclusive device that will cost an "arm and a leg"![/citation]

Yeah, and possibly a life.

Current chargers use about 5watts and an iPhone battery holds about 5watthours.
Even tripling the power consumption would not have any significant impact on your electricity bill or the world's climate.

Nobody said that "a new way of charging" means conventional induction charging.
Some people suggest they might use "resonant inductive coupling", which would allow energy transfer over a distance of several meters.

I don't see the point though. Nothing wrong with using a cable.

Just a curious question because I don't know the answer. What other electronic products out there use wireless charging currently?

As long as there's a way to cable charge the device I think this would be great. Cables are still nice for securing the device. It's nice to have a something to break the fall of the device.

All the little things add up. How many iPhones are out there and how many will there be 4 or 5 years from now? All of those wirelessly charging devices would consume a lot of power together.

This is the same mentality as "its just a dollar, it won't break you", but when you add up all the dollars you spend because its "just a dollar" it ends up being quite a lot!

You can also bet that as soon as Apple does it, a thousand other companies will feel they have to do it.

IIRC Palm Pre had this kind of charger as an optional accessory

i read that Nicola Tesla once powered 200 lightbulbs over 40 km away wirelessly and almost finished his work of sending power from the US to England via thunderstorms and the ionosphere. Then again, he was Nicola Tesla. good luck with us catching up to him.

It's actually exactly like electric toothbrushes and some wireless razors have been charged for the last 2 decades.

Not surprised by this, one of the potential spec sheets for the PS4 being shopped to the cable industry has the PS4 with a charging mat built into the top, it would allow for recharging of the remote control, and controllers all at once, no reason it wouldn't also charge your cell phone if placed on it.
