Yamaha receiver won't power on

My Yamaha receiver RX - V730 won't power on. I hear a double click when I hit the power button. Seems like it's turning itself off immediately and in a safety mode of some sort. Any advice before I chalk it up as a loss? The receiver is 16 years old...just want to make sure it's shot before I toss it. I also unplugged all wiring from the back to assure it wasn't a speaker wire issue.

If the receiver is going into protection with nothing connected to the back you can be safe in tossing it. Cost of repair, if parts were available, would probably exceed the replacement price.

Is there a small piece of metal causing a short, like a screw or a paperclip that has fallen through the vents?
