Can I retrieve Messages App messaged I deleted? Where do they go when deleted?

Somehow I accidentally deleted a message that I wanted to save. Don't want to clear out cache for Messages until I hopefully retrieve this one message and save it

Is there a way to view the contents of Messages Cache? Looks like I can only clean Cache. Would like to see content before clearing it out.

Other sources imply that unless the phone is rooted (I assume yours is not) you can't access the cache.
