To ease and expedite your emailing experience, Apple allows you to assign your preferred swipe functions to the Mail app in your iOS 11 device.
Although the ‘Flag’ and ‘Mark as Read’ functions are by default assigned to the left and right swipes respectively, you may want the Mail app to handle the mails differently when you swipe the screen.
At the time of this writing, you can assign functions for the left and right swipes. Here’s how:
Note: Make sure that you have configured the Mail app in your iOS 11 device before proceeding further.
- ■Get to the Mail settings window
Tap Settings > Mail. This opens the Mail window that allows you to configure various settings for the Mail app.

■Get to the Swipe Options window
Tap Swipe Options from under the MESSAGE LIST section. This opens the Swipe Options window that lets you assign (or reassign) the swipe functions for the Mail app in your iOS 11 device.

■Assign a function for the left swipe
Tap Swipe Left, and tap your preferred function for the left swipe. This assigns the selected function for the left swipe (Move for this demonstration). From now onward, when you swipe an email in your Inbox, iOS 11 will prompt you to choose where you want to move the email to.
Note: Any function that is already assigned to the right swipe would be grayed out, and you won’t be able to select the function until a different function is assigned to the right swipe.

■Get back to the Swipe Options window
Tap < Swipe Options from the top-left corner. This saves the changes that you’ve made, and takes you back to the Swipe Options window.

■Assign a function for right swipe
Tap Swipe Right, and tap your preferred function for the right swipe. This assigns the selected function for the right swipe (Archive for this demonstration) (Make sure to read the information that iOS 11 may display upon selecting some functions). From now onward, when you swipe an email in your Inbox to the right, iOS 11 will archive the mail.
Note: Any function that is already assigned to the left swipe would be grayed out, and you won’t be able to select the function until a different function is assigned to the left swipe.
