Fix Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 plugged in not charging problem


As a battery dependent device, if you see the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 plugged in not charging problem like we did in the earlier XPS 13, you’re not going to be happy. However, just like its predecessor, there are some checks you can perform yourself before making a warranty claim. Here are just a few of them.

Check the AC adapter
Before taking your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 back to the store, there are some simple things you can do to check and possibly, fix the issue yourself. While it does involve you doing a little investigation, it does mean you won’t have to live without your XPS while it gets fixed.

1. Check the AC adapter and cable for damage.
2. Make sure the power light is on when the adapter is plugged in.
3. Make sure all connections are tight.
4. Unplug everything and then plug it in again to verify the connection.

If the power light comes on as normal but it does not charge, you can check the Dell website for AC charger issues here or take your device back to the store.

If the power light flickers or does not light, try plugging it in to a different outlet. If it still doesn’t work, have it changed on warranty or buy a new one.

Check the battery on the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1
If the AC adapter seems to be working okay, we next need to check the battery.

1. Click Battery Health on your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. You should see ‘This battery is performing normally’.
2. If you see the message ‘plugged in not charging’ we need to do a little more work.
3. Reboot the device and check the message again to make sure it is a consistent message and not a one off.

If you still see ‘plugged in not charging’:
1. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Navigate to Batteries, right click Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall.
3. Select Scan for hardware changes in the top menu of Device Manager.
4. Allow Windows to reinstall the battery driver automatically.
5. Reboot your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.

In the majority of cases I have seen, reinstalling the driver addresses the plugged in not charging problem. If it doesn’t in your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and it is still under warranty, get it checked out. If your device is out of warranty, check the Dell Support site for further instructions.
