What laptop are you using? Some laptops do require a key combination for volume control. My dad's Dell laptop, for example, has an "Fn" key to be pressed with other keys. Casey

The hard drive in the computer should have no effect on the BIOS (or CMOS). Did the hard drive have any security features activated? That would have required a password on startup before the Windows password. If the BIOS/CMOS has locked your husband out, there is nothing we can do. Forum rules...
