Usb is backwards compatible. Usb 3.1 gen 1 is perfectly reasonable for most usb needs. Usb 3.1 gen 2 is better and thunderbolt 3 is the best.

I am trying to work out the best long-term strategy for the purchase of gaming laptops (I know desktops are cheaper, more upgradable, and generally a much better option for gaming.. but unfortunately they are not an option for me). As I see it, everyone has a budget over a given time period...
