why not buy a new/used ultra cheap laptop and install ubuntu on it yourself? it takes 30 minutes to an hour if the laptop meets ubuntu requirements.

after you install your os do windows update and do not add antivirus (the system defender that came with modern windows is enough) then do not add any unnecessary so called apps. stay away from them. edit: adblock plus extension for your browsers excepted.

any chance of putting a laptop sized hdd in instead of a boot drive (usb)? put in a ssd just for kicks. can you ask hp for a recovery disk?

with the boot disk plugged in, go into bios and switch between IDE and AHCI mode.
