    Gaming/Engineering Laptop $1200

No problem - and thanks for that insight (about gtx cards working for most of it). I don't know anything about SolidWorks, but tried to help out based on the hardware reqs on the page. Sounds like you have much better knowledge of it so I'll bow out. Happy thanksgiving!

    Gaming/Engineering Laptop $1200

Dasulman - I disagree, only the workstation GPUs are certified for SolidWorks - so you'd have him show up to class with hardware that potentially can't run his software needed? You assumed I didn't consider using a gaming gpu, but I did...

    Gaming/Engineering Laptop $1200

I think you're asking the impossible... First, I don't think people do custom built laptops...the engineering of the small size for parts doesn't yield itself to custom builds. This is what I put together for you... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/b9TdGX Slightly more expensive, but the 4770k is a more powerful processor (despite 6 physical cores), you'll benefit from a copy of windows which actually supports that much RAM, the 760 is a faster GPU, and its all quality...

    switching between dual hard drives

I'll provide a little more colour than USAFRet, though his advice is correct. I don't know how much computer experience you have, so gonna start from the beginning. I mean no insult. Your BIOS is the first piece of software the computer runs, making sure everything is working right and...
