    I have read that the license key for the OS (XP Pro) is embedded on the motherboard, so when you use a toshiba recovery disc it recognises the OS as genuine. I want to make sure that this embedded key is not destroyed by formatting the hard drive.

    I have XP Pro installed. I am going to format the hard drive and install Win7 Pro. Am I correct that formatting the hard drive does not affect the key on the motherboard in case I have to go back and install XP Pro with the recovery disc?
