Easy answer is to just restart. Otherwise there should be a button that looks mildly like some screens on the function keys that you can press to cycle display modes.

As long as your system is clean (no viruses that are slowing it down) the biggest increase you will get is by updating drivers and removing background processes. Hit CMD-SHFT-ESC and go to the start up tab and remove anything you don't need.

Most laptops have the GPU soldered into the main board and this is the case with yours. Unfortunately there is no course of upgrade for you other than investing in a new laptop.
