Solved. Eventually managed to boot with external CD drive.

I was installing a new OS, it advised the installation could not complete so I cancelled the install. Then my power went in my house and my laptop had no battery it in. Now when it boots I get the Compaq splash, I can enter BIOS but anything I try just ends with the black screen flashing cursor...
