I must be missing something. So this feature can be defeated easily by doing a hardware factory reset? Why Apply or the carrier customer support can not unlock the phone if it can verify the true ownership of the phone?

I can offer some Dos and Don'ts. Don't buy the inexpensive " New Genuine HP (Dell, Lenovo,etc.) Battery" from the eBay Power Sellers. There is no way that anyone can get large quantities of new, genuine batteries at a dirt cheap price. They are either completely fake, or genuine recycled...
