Occasionally on my laptop I will hear the fans ramp up and Firefox will choke. This is seemingly random, and CPU usage by Firefox is only going up to 25%. Typing is impossible, scrolling is impossible, doing anything in Firefox is impossible. I have 16GB of RAM and only have around 10 tabs open...

Are you by chance using a disk?

The iGPU on that laptop will be leaps and bounds faster than the graphics card.

I think prebuilts are a bad option, but a laptop would probably be worse.

Also, all laptops will slow down over time. You need to do maintenance on them just like you would anything else you want to last. They may also feel slower as technology advances. If you need the laptop to last 4 years with a healthy battery, you will need to replace the battery at some...
