Try to leave it turned on overnight and let the updates complete. There's a possibility something got corrupted when it was forced to shut down.

If this was a Desktop PC, i would recommend to change the SATA Cable for you HDD. For Laptops, try reseating the HDD, and make sure it doesn't move. A piece of paper can be used to secure it in place.

Possibly, the cable linking them to the motherboard got disconnected or in a loose connection. Try to open the laptop to check inside. It's just a small flat wire, if it is loose, just re-insert it. Or the entire panel could be defective. Have it checked if it is still under warranty.

Devices that has USB 3.0 needs a port that supports USB 3.0. If you have a device with a USB 3.0 and use it on a USB 2.0 Port, you'll only get the USB 2.0 speeds.
