    do you have a headphone amp? if not, i don't think your headphones are damaged, but the only way to know is to test them.

    Realtek ALC889 good enough for new headphones?

    generally, on-board audio is good, but don't have enough power to drive anything above ~32 Ohms at a respectable volume. I use the on-board audio on my Asus Z97-E (ALC892) with an Artcessories HeadAmp4, and my ATH-M50Xs, and it is plenty loud. sound quality is not an issue.

    recommended driver updater

    manual updates are the only way to go... most "driver updater" software is really "virus installer." best way is just to check the manufacturer's website, and the driver version you have installed, and use the latest one.
