Doesnt Asus has any short of software? Like Sony has that Vaio Control Center that has some options for the keyboard backlight.

Have you ever tried searching the laptop's settings to see if there is any option about the backlight?

Have you checked at the Sound settings of the laptop the HDMI as default device? Have you checked your TV's audio settings if HDMI isnt selected as the audio source? Maybe a temporary fix would be to let you TV open, your laptop connected and restart the laptop. Then try opening only the movie...

The speakers could be messed up if the tv is old. Try disconnecting some of the stuff that are hooked on the tv. or maybe a wild rattata got into the tv.

Try going through the TV's settings and find the audio settings. It might be set to have sound through HDMI cable.
