Is there a way to stop it happening,apart from buying a new laptop?

What I have noticed is when the game is running fine it's using 50% CPU but when it stutters/freezes processing games the CPU is at 0.

Sorry I should've included that. It's a Sony Vaio PCG 7171M running on windows vista service pack 2 with 4GB RAM. 64 bit operating system,2.10 GHz. Quite old but well capable of playing a game like CM99/00 I would have thought?
