At that price point (~$999) if you don't mind windows, an asus zenbook would be a nice alternative. Something to consider. Otherwise, get the bigger ssd, the 13 inch is plenty for most standard use, and more than 14 inches isn't comfortable for lap use, in my experience.

I've had success formatting the sd card as internal storage, worth looking in settings for. Might just be an HTC thing though.

Wow, these are remarkably good for the low cost. I would recommend something from dell or best buy personally, but I'm not sure how good they are in the UK. It seems that you want to keep quite a few large files, if you want them close at hand I'd say get something with a big (albeit slow) hard...
