You are correct. Halfway plugging in the connector will only give sound in one earpiece. Maybe your port is worn.

If you want a slim laptop, then yes, you will pretty much pay twice the price for the "same" performance. If you are willing to get a fat, heavy laptop, there are some decent value laptops out there. But don't forget that a laptop-screen can be worth several hundred dollars in itself.

Not having tried the Grados, I can't tell you about them any better than you reading about them on head-fi would. But have you tried a good equalizer software? For music and movies, this could make a big difference. A decent amplifier would probably help with getting the headphones enough power...
